What Does Production Insurance Actually Cover?

The term “Production Insurance” isn’t just one policy. It is a package of specialized coverages designed to protect every aspect of your film—from the cameras, to the crew, to the script itself.

The Anatomy of a Policy

The term “Production Insurance” isn’t just one policy. It is a package of specialized coverages designed to protect every aspect of your film—from the cameras, to the crew, to the script itself.

General Liability

Covers bodily injury (if someone trips over a cable) and property damage to third parties. Required for all film permits and location rentals.

Inland Marine (Equipment)

Covers loss, damage, or theft of rented or owned production gear, including cameras, lenses, lighting, and grip trucks.

Third-Party Property Damage

Specifically covers the location you are renting (e.g., a mansion or soundstage) if your crew damages the physical property while filming.

Negative / Faulty Stock

Covers the massive costs to reshoot if your hard drives fail, footage is corrupted, or a camera malfunctions and destroys the day's work.

Errors & Omissions (E&O)

Protects the production from lawsuits alleging defamation, copyright infringement, or unauthorized use of likeness. Required by distributors.

Hired & Non-Owned Auto

Whenever your crew drives rented trucks, vans, or their own personal cars for production business, standard liability does not protect you. You need dedicated Auto coverage.

Hired Auto Liability

Protects the production company if a rented vehicle (like a grip truck, cargo van, or picture car) causes damage or injury to a third party.

Non-Owned Auto Liability

Covers liability when production assistants or crew members drive their personal vehicles for production errands (e.g., picking up lunch or gear).

Hired Auto Physical Damage

Optionally covers comprehensive and collision damage directly to the vehicles you rent for the production.

Workers' Compensation

Protecting your personnel is both a legal mandate and an ethical necessity. Film sets are dynamic, labor-intensive environments where injuries can happen.

Medical & Disability Coverage

Covers complete medical bills, physical therapy, and lost wages if a cast or crew member suffers an injury on set.

Union & Guild Compliance

Required by SAG-AFTRA, DGA, and IATSE before union members can step on set or perform any work for your film.

Volunteers & Independent Contractors

Protects the production from lawsuits filed by 1099 contractors, interns, or unpaid volunteers who are injured on set.

Why Film Professionals Choose Us

We translate complex insurance jargon into real-world production safety.

Tailored Coverage

Don't pay for what you don't need. If you aren't renting vehicles, we don't include Auto Liability. We build packages tailored perfectly to your script and budget.

Worldwide Protection

Standard policies only cover the US and Canada. If your production travels, we effortlessly add Foreign Liability and Travel coverage to keep your crew safe abroad.

Fast COI Issuance

We know production waits for no one. Our digital systems allow you to generate Certificates of Insurance for rental houses and locations 24/7.

What You Gain By Being Insured

Get Distributed

Streamers like Netflix and Amazon will not buy your film without an E&O policy. We ensure your film is legally deliverable.

Rent Pro Gear

Rental houses will not release high-end ARRI or RED packages without proof of Inland Marine equipment coverage.

Secure Locations

City permit offices and private property owners legally require General Liability COIs before you can yell action.

Hire Union Talent

SAG-AFTRA and DGA require proof of Workers' Compensation insurance to protect their members on your set.

How To Build Your Package

Assess Risks

Do you have stunts? Drones? Water scenes? We review your script to identify unique liabilities.

Select Coverages

We assemble a package combining General Liability, Equipment, and Workers Comp.

Coverage Questions

Yes, if you add “Cast Insurance.” This covers the cost of production delays if an essential cast member or the director becomes ill, gets injured, or dies during production.

No. Hired & Non-Owned Auto Liability must be specifically added. It covers the production if a PA gets into an accident while driving a rented grip truck or their personal car on a run for the production.

Standard policies usually exclude stunts, pyrotechnics, filming on water, drones, and live animals. If your script includes these, you must inform us so we can add specialized stunt or aviation riders to your policy.
This varies by state. In many states, if you hire 1099 independent contractors but control their schedule on set, the state views them as employees, meaning you MUST have workers’ compensation to cover their injuries.
