As-Of: June 2026 | Tax Credit: 20% transferable (NO per-project cap)
Montana offers 20% transferable tax credit on qualified in-state production expenses for all production types. The transferable structure requires monetization through sale to Montana businesses, typically at 85-92 cents on the dollar. Montana has no per-project cap, enabling large productions to access full incentive value. The state requires pre-certification and maintains annual funding allocations. Montana’s primary appeal stems from extraordinary natural landscapes: mountains, forests, wildlife, open spaces, wilderness scenery unmatched in most of North America. Productions seeking authentic outdoor, adventure, western, or nature-focused content benefit significantly from Montana’s distinctive character. The state offers dramatic location authenticity. Production costs in Montana are moderate, with lower labor costs than coastal states. Local crew infrastructure exists and is developing. The combination of 20% transferable credit, no per-project cap, and incomparable natural locations makes Montana practical for outdoor-focused productions where location character justifies investment.
