Bringing History and Vision to the Screen: Virginia Film & Production Insurance

There is an incredible, profound magic that takes over when a creative group gathers to bring a story to life. The film, television, and digital media industry does so much more than capture stunning frames—it builds up our local communities, breathes life into local economies, and fosters an expansive, passionate network of visual artists, skilled technicians, hometown merchants, and visionary producers. Every single production weaves a new family, bringing together independent creators and neighborhood vendors to turn a written script into a shared human experience.

Here in Virginia, filmmakers are treated to a legendary cultural history, breathtaking natural landscapes, and a community deeply celebrated for its welcoming spirit. The Old Dominion offers a remarkably diverse geographical and architectural canvas. From the brick-lined, historic lanes of Old Town Alexandria and the grand colonial vistas of Williamsburg to the majestic, misty peaks of the Blue Ridge Mountains and the sun-swept shorelines of Virginia Beach, the state provides an incredibly rich background for any genre of storytelling.

We are incredibly grateful and proud to serve as a trusted, collaborative insurance partner to the thriving entertainment and film community across Virginia. Over the years, we have had the privilege of protecting a wonderful variety of productions throughout the state. We know the ins and outs of shooting in the region, and we specialize in providing the swift, accurate paperwork required by local municipal offices, historical parks, and state properties so that your set stays protected and your creative energy stays focused on the lens.

The Cinematic Versatility of the Old Dominion

Virginia has long captured the imagination of the world’s finest directors, showrunners, and cinematographers. The state offers a unique visual adaptability: you can effortlessly transition from sleek, modern urban corporate plazas to rolling horse country pastures, historic coastal ports, and rugged wilderness trails all within a short drive.

This rich aesthetic diversity has anchored some of the most emotionally resonant, critically acclaimed, and iconic masterpieces in cinematic history. If you are looking for creative inspiration for your next project, look no further than these legendary titles that found their visual soul right here in Virginia:

  • Lincoln (2012) – Steven Spielberg’s sweeping historical drama, filmed extensively in Richmond and Petersburg, utilizing the region’s beautifully preserved 19th-century architecture.

  • Harriet (2019) – Capturing the powerful, inspiring life of Harriet Tubman against the authentic, rugged landscapes of Central Virginia and the historic plantations of Charles City.

  • Hidden Figures (2016) – Setting a deeply moving, real-life triumph against the backdrop of Hampton and the historic space facilities of NASA’s Langley Research Center.

  • The New World (2005) – Terrence Malick bringing the early days of Jamestown to life by filming on location along the authentic waterways of the James and Chickahominy Rivers.

  • Cold Mountain (2003) – Tapping into the dramatic, rural topography of the Blue Ridge Mountains to build a powerful Civil War narrative.

  • Captain Phillips (2013) – Utilizing the massive maritime infrastructure, naval vessels, and open waters around Virginia Beach and Norfolk to shoot intense, high-stakes action.

  • Donnie Darko (2001) – Drawing from the quintessential, atmospheric suburban neighborhoods of Virginia to ground an enduring cult classic.

  • Mission: Impossible III (2006) – Capturing high-octane sequences on location across the landmarks of Northern Virginia.

Virginia’s deeply established base of local crew talent, top-tier equipment rental houses, and community-wide enthusiasm for the arts make it an exceptionally practical and rewarding place to shoot. To coordinate your local permits or discover regional production resources, we always recommend that filmmakers connect directly with the Virginia Film Office.

Comprehensive Insurance Protection Built Around Your Dream

We believe that independent storytelling is the true lifeblood of the entertainment industry. That is why we bring the exact same level of genuine warmth, professional care, and respect to every client we serve. Whether you are a student filmmaker putting your heart into a weekend short or a seasoned production team balancing a major commercial feature, keeping your cast, crew, and assets safe is our absolute priority.

To ensure your production remains fully secure from pre-production through the final wrap, we offer a flexible, robust suite of insurance coverages designed for modern filmmakers.

Short-Term Production Insurance

If you are organizing a single, focused project with a distinct schedule, short-term production insurance is a highly efficient and budget-friendly solution. This coverage is customized to protect your project for the exact days you are shooting—whether that is a single weekend commercial, a music video, or a brief documentary segment. It guards you against unexpected third-party liabilities and location property damage without requiring a costly annual premium.

DICE / Annual Production Packages

For active creative agencies, independent production companies, or digital media houses managing a continuous stream of content throughout the year, an annual DICE policy is an invaluable asset. DICE stands for Documentaries, Industrial films, Commercials, and Educational/Entertainment projects. By wrapping all of your qualifying projects under a single annual policy, you drastically reduce your administrative workload and ensure your team is covered the second cameras are ready to roll.

Entertainment Equipment Floaters

High-end cinema cameras, specialized lenses, lighting packages, and sound rigs represent a massive financial investment. Whether you own your equipment or are renting specialized gear from a vendor in Richmond, Norfolk, or Northern Virginia, an Entertainment Equipment Floater provides vital peace of mind. This specialized coverage protects physical gear against accidental drops, theft, water damage, and unpredictable mishaps on or off the set.

Multimedia Production E&O (Errors and Omissions)

While keeping your physical set safe is essential, protecting your intellectual property is just as critical. Errors and Omissions insurance safeguards your project against legal claims involving copyright infringement, plagiarism, defamation, invasion of privacy, or unauthorized use of ideas. A comprehensive E&O policy is universally required by major streaming platforms, film distributors, and broadcasters before they will clear a film for release.

Streamlined Permitting and Certificates of Insurance (COIs)

Securing a permit for a vibrant street scene in downtown Roanoke, a quiet rural road in the Shenandoah Valley, or a historic location along the Potomac River requires accurate, timely documentation. Local municipalities, state park systems, and federal historic properties will almost always require an official film permit accompanied by a Certificate of Insurance (COI) that names them as an “Additional Insured.”

Because our team works hand-in-hand with Virginia film offices, city councils, and regional regulators, we know exactly what coverage limits and specific wording they look for. We pride ourselves on our lightning-fast turnarounds, generating accurate COIs quickly so you never have to worry about missing a critical permitting deadline or losing access to a dream location.

Our Promise to You: We operate as a 99% paperless agency and hold our clients’ privacy in the highest regard. We love skipping the automated phone trees, picking up the phone, and working directly with you to find affordable, creative insurance solutions that protect your dream without exhausting your production budget.

Wherever your creative path leads you in the beautiful state of Virginia, we are here to handle the logistics so you can focus entirely on the art of filmmaking. If you are ready to secure a fast, friendly, and free quote for your next production, reach out to our team of dedicated entertainment insurance specialists today— and let’s get your project safely on the road to action!

VIRGINIA Tax Credits

As-Of: June 2026 | Tax Credit: 25% non-refundable

Virginia offers 25% non-refundable tax credit on qualified in-state production expenses for all production types. The non-refundable structure limits practical value for single-project LLCs and out-of-state producers with minimal Virginia tax liability. Credits must offset direct Virginia state tax liability or be monetized through sale to other Virginia businesses. Virginia requires pre-certification and maintains annual funding allocations. Virginia’s locations include Washington D.C. proximity (providing federal architecture and iconic locations), historic sites appropriate for period pieces, Tidewater region, natural landscapes, and diverse settings. Production costs are reasonable for East Coast. The state has developing film infrastructure, particularly in Richmond, with emerging crew capacity and equipment rental options. The combination of 25% credit and Virginia’s diverse locations makes the state practical for East Coast productions. The non-refundable structure limits value for productions without corporate presence. For East Coast productions with Virginia location requirements, Virginia offers reasonable value when financing accommodates the non-refundable structure.
